Waco Made—a brand new series of videos devoted to showcasing the stories behind Waco’s robust artisan and entrepreneurial culture. This month we’re showcasing the awesome power couple behind Black Oak Art + Gather!
The Story Behind Black Oak & Gather
Jonathan and Sara Martin’s love of hand-crafted pottery and authentic entertaining lead to a marriage of business that puts the Waco touch on the art of hospitality. Graduates from Baylor University back in the early 2000s, Jonathan and Sara moved back to Waco after a short stint in California and started their first venture, Black Oak Art.
Starting out of his garage, Jonathan began producing hand-made branded mugs for a local friend/coffee shop owner. After a few years and a handful of other accounts, Black Oak Art began to form and grow. Soon after, in a car ride conversation, the idea sprang of a second business focused around the complimentary extension of Jonathan’s hand-made pottery and the curation of locally produced home goods focused around the art of hospitality. Thus, Gather was born.
They decided to open shop on the newly developing Washington Avenue in downtown Waco between Waco Escape Rooms and Wildland Supply Co. Created as the retail front of Black Oak Art, Gather became a beautiful downtown storefront perfect for attending local classes or for spending a lengthy amount of time seeing friends, enjoying a bubbly drink, and listening to a local musician each month on First Friday.
Balanced between the Magnolia traffic and the strong support from locals, both businesses have seen great growth and development over the last few years. The future is quite exciting for both the Martin’s and their businesses, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for them. Check out the video for their full story and see why they’re “Waco Made”!
